As I open the doors to the All Stars Project building, I felt a great uncomfort not knowing what was going to happen, but at the same time anxious to get started. The All Star Project is a program as well as a internship where people go and develop skills like behaving professionally and public speaking skills. In this program people get to express themselves in a new environment. I joined this program because I wanted to do different and also these experiences will help me in the future when I go to college. I could see more and more students come in and take a seat. This made me realize that the program does work and a lot of teens are looking for a better start and a challenge. The Director of Youth programs walked in and welcomed us. In this room there was a stage and in front of it were seats. It made me wonder if we were going to perform something and as I walked to take a seat I got nervous because I did not know what we were going to do. The Director announced how we were going to do a one minute speech on our lives. She asked if anyone would like to start by coming up on stage and perform.
I could see a lot of worried faces across the room. There was a complete silence. My face was getting red as I stood there in shock. Luckily, another boy stood up and was relieved to know that I wasn’t going to be first. It looked as if he knew exactly what to say. He went on the stage. I watched him present his life and noticed it was simple and straight forward. Now that I knew exactly what to say and do, I decided to give it a shot. When I got in stage I looked at everyone and realized everything was going to go smoothly. During my speech I spoke about the way I changed my life. This change came from my religious beliefs. I became a Christian who made a huge impact in my life and I became a totally new person. I developed a better relationship with my family and friends. Everyone applauded enthusiastically. I smiled, walked down the stairs and felt a big weight lift off my shoulders. I understand the meaning of confidence, which is taking the opportunity given to you and have courage doing that. Now that I have accomplished public speaking I’m able to interact more with people.
After the participating in this program I saw things differently. I’ve learned that life is about adapting to any type of environment. The people who organized this program are very open and giving to the young people. I now carry myself more professionally with more confidence. I have become a more opened public speaker and developed interpersonal skills. Now that I have all these skills I’m able to use them toward my goals. Since I’ve become more focused, I’m able to use that in my ambition of a career in law enforcement. College would be a first step to improve my ability’s.

I am awakened by annoying honks and screaming people. The feeling of being surrounded by busted cars and dirt streets makes me sick to my stomach. From hobos to drug dealers that creep at night. While on a bus or in crowded places it is necessary to keep your bags closed and hands in your pockets. I see a whole combination of white and colored faces as i walk down the streets. English and Spanish are the music to my ears, as well as many others languages. At every corner there is a Deli Grocery store where i hear my favorite bachata or salsa music playing. Many are playing dominoes in the front or are singing and dances to the sound of the music. The feeling everyone seeing how entertaining Dominicans are makes me proud. It makes me want to open up and tell others how i live and express myself in my country. Across the street i hear my cousins screaming "Oye,ven aqui ". They invite me to play baseball. We create our teams to get the game started. Watching all of us together as a team gives me joy and pride of being in a Dominican family.

I feel the breeze through my hair while riding on a motorcycle with a complete stranger, who soon became very close to me. I arrived at the best "Chimi" place in " Los Minas". Who wouldn't stop and taste the best food in this country. Later that day i received a call from my sister where her crying try to make out that a close friend of hers was shot in the face that same day. He was never looking for trouble but because of this he was envied. We arrived at his funeral later that night where it took place at a basketball court. Through the crowded place , i was able to see the shot wound on his cheek and his bloated face broke me down into tears. Even though we were never so close with him , he was one of our people. One of our people who died for no reason. I will never forget that summer, which showed me that by a single breath our lives can be taken away and only God knows why.

Transferring to Brandon High School was the biggest mistake of my life. I am the needle in the hay sack which was never found. I am all alone and wanting my friends. The tears run down my cheeks while i sit in the cafeteria. I was placed in classes that expanded my intelligence which i benefit from a lot still till this day. In class I am very caught up and able to understand the materials given to me. Here I am treated with respect and my education is treated more serious. While weeks passed i met someone who can be described as me. We came from the same place and enjoyed playing baseball. We understand each other, even our moms became close friends. During the time i spend in the school we became very close friends and soon the environment all felt right. From empty, comfortable buses to the smell of fresh flowers that filled the air. Suited up social workers in the morning and police officers paroling the streets was what seemed right to me. I adapted to the environment, like a chameleon changing colors. This place gave me a glimpse of the future i see myself in.
